About us
Micheweni
Community Radio is the first ever community radio in Zanzibar islands Broadcast through 97.4 FM. This is
one of the districts with the lowest social economic indicators, below Zanzibar
averages, facing malnutrition, child labour, gender-based violence and other
issues.
The Radio was started with the aim of raising awareness on girl’s education, a
direct result of the very high dropout rates of girls, but it is also an
important medium of building and maintaining peace in the islands.
Before
2010 , when the Government of National Unity in Zanzibar was formed, Pemba
Island used to be engulfed in a political crisis. The radio was launched in
2010, with UNESCO’s support through UN Joint Programme 5 on capacity building
for Zanzibar.
It
should be noted that, in terms of policy and legislation, Micheweni Community
Radio serves as a test bed for local media in Zanzibar islands: the
Broadcasting Policy recognizing community broadcasting in Zanzibar came about
at the same time when this radio was launched.
Micheweni
radio manages its programme and activities in partnership with Pemba Press
Club, one of the most successful and highly professional press clubs in
Tanzania.
